PRESIDENT OF LEEDS LAW SOCIETY: 1 JUNE 2017 – 31 MAY 2018
Bill has specialised in construction and non-contentious construction for nearly 30 years, having been a partner with Walker Morris, Watson Burton and DLA. He has particular expertise in drafting and negotiating specialist bespoke contracts in relation to wind farms and renewable energy such as solar and biomass, as well as standard construction projects. As a result, Bill is experienced in drafting amendments to and negotiating not only standard forms of contract such as JCT, NEC and ICE, but also the FIDIC Red and Silver books and the IChemE Burgundy, Red and Yellow books.
Bill’s experience is wide-ranging, from industrial developments in Hull to colleges in Stoke and Lancashire, solar projects in the UK and Europe, from Scottish and Welsh wind farms to oil tank farms in Ghana, from construction contracts in Greece to a pharmaceutical plant in Liverpool, from bottling production and supply contracts to PFI contracts, from waste management contracts to contracts for housing associations, as well as advising foreign clients on international contracts under English jurisdiction.
An increasing element of Bill’s work is working for other law firms, whether effectively as an additional in-house construction team or directly for one of their clients. An increasing number of these law firms are internationally recognised practices (Legal 500/Chambers).
Bill is a qualified mediator and a fellow of the Institute of Arbitrators, and has substantial experience in conducting adjudications, mediations and arbitrations, as well as litigation within the TCC. He is an occasional lecturer at Leeds University Department of Engineering and has prepared and delivered seminars in house and at conferences both nationally and internationally.
As a result of his many years’ practice as a construction lawyer, Bill is well-recognised and highly regarded in this area by fellow solicitors, barristers’ chambers and clients.
Outside of work, Bill has numerous personal interests including running, hockey, golf and travel. He is also a junior hockey coach at Leeds Hockey Club.
