President’s Charity 2017 – 2018

the haven

Breast Cancer Haven, Yorkshire, is delighted to have been selected as the chosen charity for the 2017-18 President, Bill Barton.

About us

Breast Cancer Haven provides free emotional, physical and practical support to anyone affected by breast cancer from its centres across the country.  A diagnosis of breast cancer can be frightening and the treatment gruelling. Surgery, hair loss, radiation, chemotherapy and medication can all take its toll. Medical treatment is necessary but people need so much more than this. That is where we come in.

We offer advice on practical things like money and work, help combatting stress, exhaustion and nausea, advice on healthy eating, complementary therapies to help alleviate the horrible side effects of treatment.  Around 400 women in the UK die every year because they decide not to take their hormone treatment for breast cancer due to its unbearable side effects. Breast Cancer Haven therapies can change this.

Above all, there will always be someone to talk to about people’s deepest fears. Our trained professional nurses, therapists, counsellors and advisers listen to individual concerns and give each person (and loved ones) all the practical, emotional and physical support they need in a tailor-made package.

We help anyone with a breast cancer diagnosis at any stage of their treatment, in any location in England and Wales at our centres, via our online resources, Haven at Home DVD and outreach days. We don’t turn anyone away and help where we can.

Since Breast Cancer Haven opened in Leeds in October 2008, we have supported over 3,200 Visitors, and have provided over 48,000 therapy hours, which affirm the great need for our services in the region. It costs us approximately £1,500 to put a Visitor through the full Breast Cancer Haven programme of support and we are pleased to confirm that all the money raised through the partnership with the Leeds Law Society will remain here in Yorkshire.

One Visitor recently explained, “I can honestly say that while the NHS undoubtedly saved my life, Breast Cancer Haven enabled me to live it again.”
